Brexit Broke Britain

Don Adamson writes

From Don Adamson, Brexorcist in Chief from Yorkshire.

This week’s quotes: “Ahead of us is the worst two years economically in living memory … British Toryism has come to the end of a long era … failed as a trustworthy government … Tories lost control of the economy … become an instrument for political elite self preservation, a machine to keep people like Boris Johnson in power … Brexit is the triumph of ideology over economic self interest … Tory Utopian  cult … Tories have very few sources of intellectual renewal …  there is money in climate change denial … there may be  conservative thinkers who understands the profound damage Brexit has done … but they have nowhere to go …  Tories must be paid for this with a generation out of power …  at every stage Tories doubled down on crass xenophobia and legalised corruption … what is missing is a critique of Brexit …UK economy is hobbled … every week brings worse news for Brexit believers … widely viewed as a mistake … Andrew Neil said *unt’s Autumn Statement was the ‘day Brexit died’ …. Telegraph says ‘we’re in this mess because of Brexit … Brexit free trade deals … ‘hopeless’ … met year Britain will be ‘the sick man of Europe’ … sharpest economic decline in the continent … Piers Morgan, who vehemently opposed the Peoples Vote comment ‘it is time to admit that Brexit is a disaster … without question there is mounting public disenchantment with Brexit …  there is clearly a large public appetite for a major reset with the EU … economists maintain Brexit has deepened economic crisis … George Eustice, head of DEFRA at the time said the trade deal with Australia ‘was not very good, nor was the one with New Zealand.’ … After years of being told that Brexit was a triumph we now find that a) when you are desperate and b) led by people with the negotiating skills of Neville Chamberlain, a disappointing result is guaranteed … it was not in our economic interests … neither Australia or NZ had anything to offer in return … if this was the only damage Brexit was heaping on the UK farm industry they might count themselves lucky but it is not … effortless lies of the Brexit campaign … result is appallingly badly negotiated trade deals giving huge rivals massive advantages … a raft of other problems … UK government seems intent on making it worse not better … prospects for small farmers grim … one in 8 jobs is not filled … £60m worth of food left to rot in the fields last year … slaughter and waste of tens of thousands of pigs … government is taking huge risks with the industry … illegal meat on 21 of 22 lorries coming into the country … the chances of African Swine Fever another devastating disease getting into the country much higher than they were … post Brexit food checks at the border are just not happening … just like the fishing industry the farming industry was cast aside the second the referendumb votes were in … a government desperate to leave the EU at any price and signed trade deals no matter how bad in a pathetic attempt to show that Global Britain really existed … betrayed the industry … Eton College invited Nigel Garbage to speak … girls from visiting state schools invited to the event subjected to misogynistic abuse and racial slurs … ‘top private schools’ are a big part of what is wrong with Britain … Richy Scumbag is busily pretending the economy was swimming along nicely prior to Ukraine War and Kamikwaze Trussonomics … Thick Lizzie’s biography will be lucky if it sells a few hundred copies … books on contemporary politicians do not sell … Paul Dacre’s loathing of Richy Scumbag for his betrayal of Johnson … Tories are not going to win the next election … Johnson has still to land the job worthy of his dubious talents, wanted to see Murdoch … at his cattle ranch in Montana … Murdoch obligingly paid £11,000 for Johnson and two flunkies to make the visit … Gove is taking luxury breaks … two nights … £2,036 …paradoxically an attempt to distance themselves for responsibility for the failures of Brexit … Murdoch dictates politics both in the UK and the US … beyond scandalous … One of the strangest things about Britain, a country obsessed with immigration, is that we have no way of counting things … Office of National Statistics figures show a net immigration record of 504,000 are ‘experimental and provisional’ … Brexit was achieved on a promise to cut immigration to ‘tens of thousands’ … you would expect a rise of half million to cause riots in the street … Brexit was supposed to decrease immigration and drive up wages of least skilled Brits. The opposite has happened … engineering factories in England could double their workforce, earning very decent money, if they could find the people … an A & E department in Wales that will soon close because … cannot attract doctors … 165,000 missing care home workers … as for skilled welders, forget it … Britain is an aging society … two decades of flirtation with right wing populism brings division and self hate … I hope the Tory failure by their own metrics  will convince Tory voters that Brexit was a chimera … number of people that see Brexit as a mistake is steadily rising … makes the cross party omerta on the subject bizarre … a clear majority believe Brexit was the wrong choice … a unanimity that Brexit was going badly … elephantine problem sitting defiantly in the room … dropping turds … Nick Robinson asked Michael Gove to explain Brexit benefits … Gove was a key architect of Brexit … his failure to explain was stunning … skewering of Jeremy *unt … exposed *unt as Trumpian … based his entire strategy on OBR … accepting OBR figures when it suited him and rejecting them when it did not … fiscal black hole … Brexit black hole is an economic reality … hard to discern what Sunak’s point might have been … Dominic Raas faces three separate allegations of bullying … hardly an isolated  case … Priti Patel … multiple proven  investigations … public money used to pay settlements against civil servants she abused … wider culture of ministers being railing and dismissive Jacob Rees Mogg … apparently unaware that government had sold off large amounts of office space … ministers dysfunctional and abusive … to denigrate people who cannot answer back is textbook bullying … clash between ideology and reality … civil servants deal with the world as it is … put it on the wrong side of Brexiters … alarmingly few of the people running the country have worked at the coal face … no former doctors, teachers or administrators … how can you run an  organisation if you have no idea how … dysfunctional work environment  will produce dysfunctional work … consequences of bad ministerial culture are everywhere … austerity … underfunding … and Brexit chaos … toxic culture of British politics … Brexit has damaged British construction through a self inflicted skills shortage and higher prices for raw materials … Brexit has hit construction industry hard … EU exporters decided …. red tape, expense and bother of trading with the UK not worth it … stopped supplying the Brits … pathetic attempt by British government to change regulations by abandoning EU scheme … and introducing UK specific scheme … harebrained notion is damaging every sector of the economy … nobody beyond the Brexiters can see the reason … to change at huge expense and end up with a system that is worse than the existing one … skills shortages … UK has been unable to train enough Brits … the system just does not work … government’s inability to reform the planning system and make it work … many firms are just not large enough to train apprentices … complete failure of reforms to the apprenticeship system … has added insult to injury … Brexit ultras insist that there is a vast pool of labour and people just need to be forced into the workplace … just kidding themselves … problems Brexit has imposed … disastrous UK regulatory regime … delay the construction of homes and switch to low carbon heating … one more powerful incentive to stop supplying the UK market … British economy heading towards a slowdown … made worse by problems coming down the track … government that makes changes for no good reason … solid foundations and good sense do not interest this government … when Richy Scumbag came out for Brexit he made it very much about him giving his word to his constituents that it would work out for the best … I can see a lot of disillusioned Tories switching to the Lib Deems or not bothering to vote … Buyer’s Remorse is worrying Tory local associations … Labour activists have been trawling through Scumbag’s 2016 Brexit literature … finding its way to the press … bold promises to local farmers … concept of non tariff barriers notably absent at the time … Scumbag demonstrated how ignorant he was … Tory grandees once queued up to pay court to Michelle Mone, now with allegations that she made millions after lobbying ministers … she has become Baroness No Mates … If Lords Commissioners or National Crime Agency find her guilty she will be booted out of Lords … Thick Lizzie’s aides described Michael Gove … a troubled and dark soul with a streak of sadism … Daily Mail trying to build bridges with Labour … requires Rothermere to swallow bitter pills, not least in relation to non Dom tax status … when will somebody tip off Starmer that Brexit is a disaster? … Sick man of Europe … It has not taken long for Britain to revert to the state it was in during the 1960s and 1970s … Labour has spent years trying to make a round Brexit fit into a square non Brexit hole … Economic cheer is thin on the ground. Household incomes … pummelled by soaring energy costs … rising interest rates … rising taxes … Office for Budget Responsibility predicts steepest drop in living standards on record … only Russian economy would fare worse among G20 countries … Thick Lizzie’s disastrous mini budget … after 12 years of Tory rule Britain has limited political imagination. When a government source suggested closer ties with the EU a weeklong bloodletting followed … that a clear majority of Brits think leaving the EU was a mistake barely influences the debate … both Labour and Tories plough on with an argument in which public opinion is irrelevant … NHS and CBI are crying out for more workers … polls indicate that Brits, on the whole, are happy for immigration to go up if needed … talk of looser immigration rules are pooh Poohed by Tories … Labour discuses the subject with the caution of a hostage negotiator talking to a suicide bomber … for Tories only voters that count are immigration sceptic Brexiters … Britain is ruled for elderly for whom economic growth feels like an inconvenience  rather than a necessity … Labour will govern within Tory parameters …people have begun to notice that things are not going well. They will get worse. The country is about to witness its biggest drop in real incomes since records began … Britain may be strategically closer to the USA and Germany stronger economically but post Brexit France is the military heavyweight … Europe can learn from Britain about the folly of leaving the EU …

Happy Brexmas

From Don Adamson, Brexorcist in Chief from Yorkshire.

This week’s quotes: “Richy Scumbag pretends Brexit is going well … Tories want to present the Thick Lizzie era as a weird aberration … enormous damage to the NHS … being behind rather than leading public opinion is a bad place for political leaders to be … thanks to their shared Brexomerta that is where Richy Scumbag and Starmer position themselves …bands, lawyers suffer Brexit damage … Brexit barriers to trade in goods … caught the attention of the media … UK is not a manufacturing economy … services make up 80% of British economy … Brexit has chipped away at its importance …  something unpleasant is happening to our services based economy … British government failed to negotiate a deal on services with EU … smaller companies simply stopped trading with EU … huge grey areas … changes have hit every industry …  expensive and waste of time and effort … Music artists will find it harder to break through … Thatcher promoted the Single Market … for decades that was a huge win for UK economy … criminal investigations into Michelle Mone continue … Michael Gove distancing himself from the tycoon … he referred her bid what turned out to be unfit PPE to the ‘right channel’ … Johnson sees a return to journalism as infra dig … he genuinely harboured intentions to be the next Secretary General of NATO … former PMs with dubious reputations are proving harder to place these days … Cameron, May, Johnson, Thick Lizzie have little more to say in their bios than ‘former PM’ … Liam Fox notched up 400,000 air miles without bagging any deals … Starmer cannot claim to be on the side of ordinary people if he is determined to ignore the blindingly obvious … Twitter descends into the hellscape that is Elon Musk’ fevered inferiority complex … Economists line up to show how well the NHS is funded … people waiting to see GP, lying in ambulances for hours or dying before cancer treatment provide the reality check … We have sent thousands of doctors and nurses packing … consequence of Brexit … failure to train enough people … Jeremy *unt’s laments sit oddly with the fact that he was Health Secretary for over six years … there is reason to doubt integrity of ministers investigations into dodgy equipment …Is Nadhim Zahawi OK ? …billed the taxpayers thousands of pounds to heat his horse’s stables … is he the best person to say that overworked and underpaid nurses should suffer yet more privation? … More reasons why the government should not go on strike …if they are so poor they should marry somebody rich … people tip waitresses … patients should slip a tenner down the nurse’s apron, like you do with a stripper’s g-string… Scores of Afghans who helped the British fled to Iran. Brexit NHS Farage

The NHS and Brexit

From a friend … This tells the story of the reality of Tory Brexit cuts in graphic detail …

Hi everyone, just want to explain to you all why I have been quiet since before Christmas.
Also to those of you that may be a bit cynical that the A&E is not in as bad a crisis as it seems.
I can tell you the images that are shown on TV are the easy on the eye images.
This is my experience please read to the end …
Before Christmas I had the flu virus. I made two attempts to get a doctor’s appointment. Both failed and I ended up needing antibiotics for what took place subsequently.
On Christmas Day I was in so much pain was taken to Medway hospital by ambulance had intravenous antibiotics sent home to come back Wednesday
On Wednesday attended SDEC (Same Day Emergency Care) after X-rays and bloods I was told I had severe pneumonia and pleurisy with infected fluid around my lung.
As no bed available I was sat in a recliner chair in SDEC treatment room 1.
There I stayed for 5 days.
There were 14 patients waiting for beds in an area that is not set up for long term patients hence SDEC.
in the day the general public and A&E patients were coming in for treatment next to us.
I was having constant iv painkillers antibiotics saline oxygen and nebuliser with all this going on around me.
As not a ward there were no washing facilities we had to use a public toilet which was often filthy NHS is short of cleaners.
I was left sitting in my own urine and diarrhoea as was too weak to walk out to the toilet. I vomited all down myself but no nurse was available to help me . The other patients were trying to help each other.
I honestly thought I would die in there.
The nurses were writing notes on paper towels as they had no paper.
Took 3 days to get a pillow and blanket.
I do not blame the nurses and other staff at all. They are so over worked and kept apologising for the situation. They are not equipped in that area for long term patients.
They had to search for breakfast and meals for us.
On the 6th day I was moved to a ward normally I hate going in to a ward but when I got there it felt as if I had stepped in to heaven it was clean, calm and quiet and when the nurse said would I like a wash (I had not had a wash for 6 days and had sores on my bottom).
I broke down sobbing. I had been so traumatised by what I experienced the nurse sat and held my hand to calm me.
I was in that ward for 2 days it felt like heaven.
I am now home with a 6 week recovery.
I do not blame the staff at the hospital.
I blame the Government.
“To get Brexit done“ they promised.
“To put £350 million EVERY WEEK into The NHS”.
“To build 40 new hospitals”.
“To fund and train 50,000 nurses”.
40, 000 have left the profession.
They have not delivered any of the above.
Our NHS is broken, A&E is in crisis and we need another A&E hospital towards Swale to cope with the amount of houses being built in Kent.
I am totally traumatised by what I experienced. No one should go to hospital and have to go through that.
Fuck The Tories.
This is their doing. They need to make it good.

It is the secret of its success … Like Denmark; Ireland’s membership has been a triumph… Fascism is flourishing in many places and we need to appreciate its many guises or we may find our heads under its foot … If Keith Starmer thinks the localised control agenda is a powerful weapon for Labour he is right. What does he want? … Promises quickly disintegrated … deal with the acute NHS crisis by simply denying it … promised to cut the national debt … in 2010 national debt stood at  £1,200 Billion … in 2022 national debt stood at £2,400 Billion … cut NHS waiting lists … tin eared promise … NHS is on the brink of collapse … years of neglect … 500 excess deaths a week … ignoring daily tales of devastation in British hospitals … as surreal as it is horrifying … Scumbag refuses to call it a crisis … stupid promises … sounds callous … even the people to whom the message was delivered do not believe it can be done … delivered nothing … vague promises … no vision, no clear ideology … Scumbag is trying to cast himself as an efficient manager … one key component mission … you have to be an effective manager … UK is having one of the worst economic downturns in the developed world … economic hard times … collapse in public services … saying noting and hoping it gets better feels like the panic reaction of a hedgehog … he needs to display some kind of competence … looks increasingly more like a hollow man … it used to be possible to read a news page and discern genuine news in there, as opposed to the news bias fusion than masquerades as news in most of the press … Sunday Times Editor Allister Heath, backer of Brexit, former colleague of Johnson, truly, madly, deeply lover of Thick Lizzie in her brief and catastrophic premiership now says ‘Nobody wants to confront the truth: Britain is becoming a poor country … even people like Heath are forced to accept that the decline in real … in the extensive right wing bollocksphere the wronger you are the higher you fly … debate is dominated by the right wingers who got us into this mess … it is not just the Tories but the ghastly army of cheerleading hacks who have twisted and turned to back every manifestation over the last decade that has done incalculable harm … Michael Heseltine does not accept for one moment that Brexit irreversible …  Brexit has made fishing industry’s plight even worse … swallowed the lie … promised the earth but found it was deceived … many in the fishing industry ignored the facts during the referendum … hopes turned out to be fantasy … industry was promised it would get more … it was not true government claims the whole sordid mess is a success … industry is being hit … the government is not listening … Britain is in recession … failure … it is a stark reminder in the reduction of negotiating power since Brexit … majority of the industry is worse off …  it was lie … once the photo opportunities were over the truth hit home … after being the poster boys of Leave … the fishing industry has been betrayed by Brexit … Dido Harding’s underlying loyalties to money spinning private healthcare now clear … Harding has kept a low profile since she presided over the £37 Billion test and trace fiasco … has accepted a consultancy role at Vitrifi … a company that donates to the Tory Party … history of failing upwards … test and trace was an eye watering waste of money … Harding pins her hopes on Johnson returning as PM … Johnson is not too discreetly laying the groundwork for a return … Mail on Sunday obediently carried a piece that Starmer’s chances of being PM would harmed if Johnson returned … Johnson charged the taxpayer for a Remembrance Day wreath … Jacob Rees Mogg’s ambitions to be Tory leader … quietly abandoned … his firm up for sale … no buyer … having to get buy on £500,000 a year .. lower than the £9.7 Million that he banked a year earlier … in 2011 a group of newly elected Tory MPs … forgotten book ‘After the Coalition’ … Britain’s unique strengths … including membership of the EU … they were Priti Patel, Dominic Raas, Toilet Kwarteng, Thick Lizzie … loathsome characters we must thank for the 2016 referendum result … resulted in so much damage … Rees Mogg deserves a large share of the responsibility … Rees Mogg is a fake … his persona is a parody … preposterous …  clownocracy … political manipulators … Brits used to see the |National Health Service as a source of pride … in December over 5,000 sick people in England waited more than 12 hours to be admitted to hospital from A & E departments … one in four excess deaths recently attributable to delays in emergency care … the system is buckling … “

Gerrymandering

From Adrian Ekins-Daukes, Brexorcist in Chief and ex-Conservative from Tunbridge Wells.

Tories open the door to gerrymandering

When the Elections ID Act comes into force this April, there will be controversial changes. One will be that voters will have to prove their identity (ID), for the first time in local elections this May, or be refused a voting slip and be turned away.

The range of ID forms qualifying to the government’s rules is limited. They include: passports and driving licences, bus and other passes for older and disabled persons and an ID ‘PASS’ card currently available. The procedure for obtaining this PASS card is not straightforward, requiring photos, birth certificates and some form of attestation and registration.

Was there a need for this ? Does electoral fraud really threaten our democracy ? The Electoral Commission produces annual reports on this subject :-

In 2021 there were local council elections across Britain in May – many postponed from 2020 – as well as six Parliamentary by-elections. The police investigated 315 cases of alleged electoral fraud, none of which led to a court conviction. In 60% of the cases there were no grounds for taking any further action and 30% further cases were locally resolved. In just one case, a caution was issued.

In 2019 there was a general election, local elections and a European Parliamentary election as well as seven Parliamentary by-elections. The police investigated 595 cases, on which over 60% no further action was taken and a further third were locally resolved. In that year there were four convictions for electoral fraud and two cautions were issued … from 68 MILLION people.

Overall. more than half reported cases concerned campaigning breaches – failure to include required information on campaign literature or making false statements about a candidate.

The figures for 2019 and 2021 are typical of those produced by the Electoral Commission for the whole period 2017-21. They bear out the Commission’s own conclusion that there is no evidence of large-scale electoral fraud in Britain.

As there is no clear need for ID legislation for elections, the government must other reasons for giving it priority at this time of emergency. The choice of acceptable ID proof other than driving licences and passports provides a clear indication, There are numerous free passes for the elderly, who are deemed more likely to vote Conservative,. The disabled are also looked after. But there are almost none suited for younger people, who are less likely to be Torie.. Efforts to widen the choice to include, for example, student ID cards and rail cards were voted down by the Tory majority in the House of Commons. Labour MP Russell Moyle who worked on the legislation at the committee stage has said that “ young people will be discriminated against much worse than older voters,” and that “there is clearly an element of voter discrimination. “ A New York City Councillor has advised that the level of discrimination in this Act is worse than that practiced in any US state.

The estimated cost of implementing this legislation over the next 10 years is £180m – this at a time of austerity and hardship caused to a considerable degree by Tory dogma and incompetence. But for today’s Tories, power by any means is the overwhelming priority. In comparison, the interests of our country, the health of our businesses, the well-being of people are of little. consequence. Respect for democracy counts for even less.

As well as legalised voter suppression, the same legislation will remove the independence of the Electoral Commission, placing it under Government control. This opens the door to all forms of malpractice. It is our own Government, not a handful of minor offenders, who are the real enemies to our democracy. We need to fight if we want to keep it.

April Brexit Fools

By Don Adamson, Brexorcist and Saboteur First Class

This week’s homework: 1930s Japan has been described as a period of ‘Brainless Patriotism’ An out of control government embarked on mad, bad and dangerous policies. This led to a terrible war with tragic consequences for millions of people. In this country we have an out of control government that is full of ‘Brainless Patriotism’ and which carries out mad, bad and dangerous policies. The Labour Party has nothing to say about this except vague assurances about ‘making Brexit work.’ If you are going to steal ideas from other people (Japanese or anybody else) would make sense to steal ideas that are otherwise than mad, bad and dangerous.

Therese Coffey has been dumping infected gammon into supermarkets. In other news, she was seen with a wooden leg … Cannabalism is suspected after Iain Duncan Smith was seen running away from the scene.

This week’s quotes: “What Gary Lineker taught us about taking a stand… The BBC, its board stuffed by Tory culture warriors caved in … Lineker has a history of anti racist statements … Tory decision to wage a culture war has left no middle ground … progressive people were dismayed by Labour’s stand on the ‘Illegal immigration bill’ … ‘it would not work’ rather than its cruelty … beyond awful … unfairness and hypocrisy behind the BBC response … Lineker spoke for all of us … Tories bereft of answers …  Lineker activated a mass of discontent among BBC journalists … who are clearly sick of the Tory appointed managers … Hunt’s budget proves that Brexit is only paying off in a parallel universe … Britain is living in an alternate reality … surreal world where the government lives … the rest of us can see the damage that Brexit is doing … Office of Budget Responsibility … showing how Brexit is wrecking everything, everywhere, all at once … economy is 4% small than if we had stayed in the EU& .. the only opportunities from Brexit are lost opportunities … costing the government a fortune … without Brexit we could have increased NHS and social spending by  from around £184B to about 327B… government is still borrowing lots of money … the largest tax burden ever … hard to get debt on a downward path … disastrous fall in living standards … slashed long term growth and little sign of it improving … good news for the very rich … huge tax breaks for the wealthy …

The Brexit Black Hole

By Adrian Ekins-Daukes – former Conservative Councillor, Tunbridge Wells

The Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, went to considerable lengths in his budget speech to cover up the extent of the black hole in Britain’s finance’s, largely attributable to Brexit and deepened by Liz Truss’s and Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini-budget in their brief period in power.  His fantasies, however, that Brexit is going to plan and delivering successes come up against the real world inhabited by most of us, where the damage caused by Brexit becomes ever plainer.  The facts provided by the Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR) and other authorities are set out below.

THE DEPTH AND COST OF THE HOLE

The OBR had  confirmed its view prior to the budget that Brexit has reduced  the UK economy by 4% lower than it would have been had  we stayed in the EU.  Without Brexit, the money saved could, in theory, have increased spending on the NHS and social care from around £148bn to £327bn.  Since in practice no government would have spent the whole of such a sum, the real cost of Brexit would probably be £40-£50 billion per annum.

The budget makes clear that the government is still borrowing heavily – the equivalent of 5.1% of GDP in 2023/24, dropping in phases to 1.7% in 2027/28.  Without the Brexit “black hole”, that borrowing would have been lower and the  interest burden less.  Both the Institute for Fiscal Studies and the OBR, in their comments on the budget, stressed the seriousness of the difficulties facing our economy, notably the largest tax burden in years on and huge levels of borrowing But there also difficulties other than the black hole which impede diminishing it.

BREXIT VIRUS MAKES UK SICK MAN OF EUROPE

OBR forecasts a fall of a further 6% in disposable household income over the next two years – the biggest drop in living standards since records began, a lower level than that before the pandemic and the worst record for any major economy.  According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the UK will have the worst economic performance of the G20 in 2023 (the  20 largest economies including sanctions-hit Russia) The UK economy will shrink this year by 0.3% in 2023 before growing by 1% next year.  Other major economies are forecast to grow in 2023 except that of Germany, which is forecast to drop less than ours.

NO EXIT WITH BREXIT FROM BLACK HOLE

The Chancellor is well aware of economic policies capable of stimulating the economy.  Investment is one, and he has devised tax incentives to encourage  businesses to invest.  However, his own figures show this will only be bring forward expected business investment, not create more of it.  As for new investment from abroad, there is little prospect of regaining the UK’s position as top recipient in Europe of foreign investment when we were in the EU.  The attraction of our market was largely due to free access to the EU single market.  Without that access, our market alone lacks the same attraction.

A boost in trade would be another path to economic recovery, improving productivity and keeping prices down.  Here, however, the OBR prediction is a 15% fall, due to post-Brexit disruption and red tape. The Brexiteer future vision of “global Britain” involves imposing costs and obstacles on previously highly profitable trade with our nearest neighbours, whilst attempting to divert our trade pattern to far off markets on the other side of the globe, where our exports will be subject to high shipping costs and high environmental impact, language differences and other costs and barriers.   It is calculated that our much-trumpeted accession to the Pacific Trade Area will boost GDP by just 0.08%, no substitute for the 4% lost by leaving the EU.  We would need 50 of such trade deals just to stand still.  There are not 50 trading blocs in the world and, as yet we are not trading with the people of Uranus.  It would seem that the Liz Truss’ thinking on growth is coming from ‘heranus’ and not Uranus.

THE MAIN BUDGET BENEFICIARIES ?

One measure in the budget is the removal of the total limit that people can save into their pension pots.  The purpose of this is claimed to be to encourage retired doctors back to work, thus relieving pressures on the NHS.  Whether or not it has this effect, the benefit goes much wider, granting tax breaks to the best-off 1% (e.g. bankers, hedge fund managers, development moguls as well as senior doctors), at a cost to the tax payer of £1 billion a year.

THE SOLUTION ?

Joining the EU and creating the EU Single Market provided the opportunities to raise our economy from being the Sick Man of Europe where it languished in the late 1960s/70s.  Follow this path by restoring our close economic relationships with the EU as soon as possible.

Speaking of black holes, please vote the Tory aliens out on May 04.

Broken Britain

Don Adamson reviews the week – there’s not enough time to get it all done within a short article !!

This week’s homework: Discuss the following statement. We used to have a system in this country. When the Tories ran out of steam Labour would take over for a while. When Labour ran out of steam the Tories would take over. It did not make for great government but it did provide for failure. That system does not work anymore. Tories have proved themselves unfit to govern and show no indication of having learned the error of their ways. Labour has been AWOL since 2010 and shows no indication of wanting to form a government. The only answer they have for inexcusable standard of government that we have is that Labour makes vague and unconvincing promises ‘to make Brexit work.’ To quote Shakespeare: A plague on both their houses. We have local government elections coming up. Vote for anybody, repeat anybody, who wants to Rejoin the EU.

This week’s quotes: “Thick Lizzie and Toilet Kwarteng broke the economy … this budget is returning to Trussonomics… huge benefits for the rich … higher taxes and worse public services for the rest of us … good ideas that clash with Brexit ideology … useless ideas, waste of time and money but the Brexiters like it … incomes fall by further 6% … biggest drop in living standards since records began .. worst record for any major economy … rocked by post Brexit disruption …  Global Britain is a lie … £29B in lost investment … future growth is unlikely to take off … lower growth because of Brexit, higher taxes because of Brexit and worse public services because of Brexit … throwing billions at the wealthiest … Brexit has made everything worse … As always in Tory Britain, there is one rule for them and another for the rest of us …  Tory MPs breathless excitement at the news that Richy Scumbag was not as totally useless as Johnson and Thick Lizzie … Daily (Once was a real newspaper) Telegraph …. in other news you are unlikely to hear … Rwanda has so far picked up £140M for the deportation scheme at the time that the number of asylum seekers sent there was zero … What Sue Ellen Braverman calls invasion has been a continuous process throughout history … there is no precise distinction between British and non British life forms … never mind the facts … atavistic fear of invasion … hard to say which is more dismaying … politicians compete as to who can be the nastiest … to the most desperate people on earth … Braverman’s nasty public image … Rwanda policy is doomed … as is Richy Scumbag’s pledge to stop boats crossing … UK is abdicating an essential responsibility under international law … Rwanda’s problematical track record on human rights … British government’s message is baffling … even more nonsensical … the site Braverman visited is nothing to do with the UK … smoke and mirrors with nothing behind them … sadistic bait … UK receives small number of asylum seekers than even most European countries … British government policy serves to enrich and empower people smugglers … do we compromise with reality or continue the current deadly charade … toxicity of the asylum debate … ridiculous backlog of claims … realism needs to enter the debate …  so long as there is profit people smugglers will enable that behaviour …  ridiculous … government is  taking the public for fools … promising something it cannot deliver … decent economic growth has escaped the Tory government for all 13 years of its tenure … Braverman’s Rwanda policy is the worst of all the options … no PM has abused powers in such a manner in the last 50 years …

Johnson’s hypocrisy … taxpayer footing the bills … Johnson has made £3.5M and counting … Murdoch talks of being Scottish … he is whatever is expedient for tax purposes … little fraternisation between Daily Mail top brass and Richy Scumbag … Richy Scumbag is in no hurry to sign off the peerage for Dacre … he could do without yet another sleaze scandal … Braverman is awful … scandals … idiotic remarks … fault is not with her but with those who over promoted her … not up to the job … Scumbag is scared of the not sensible wing of his party … Tories have run out of ideas … out of control … desperation leads to bad choices …  Braverman gets a free ride for a calculated lie … Tories abandoned the British manufacturing industry in 1979 …

Trump’s dwindling but increasingly unhinged fan base … Brexit is most  embarrassing unforced error since Villa keeper let a throw in into his net … Inflation in Britain rose to 10.4% in February … machinery and structure of British government need reform …

Dump Trump

Johnson’s blustering testimony to Parliament reminded us what we had not been missing … less experienced officials acre in more senior posts …  ministers have eroded the tradition that officials provide candid advice … the planning system makes quagmires look slick … taxation will reach a lost war high this year … not producing better results … bleak picture …
